General questions and answers about
winches
Electric motors generally have two major parts, the stator and the rotor
(or
armature). The stator will produce a magnetic field which causes the
rotor to
rotate when an electric current flows through it.
With a permanent magnet motor the stator uses magnets to operate. The
current
drain on the battery will be lower than a series wound motor (which uses
field coils in the stator). These motors are excellent for light and
medium duty winching,
but winching time and load has to be carefully monitored as they tend to
overheat.
A series wound motor would be used in heavier duty winches, but they
usually will cost more.
